Professor Juliana Chan is Chair Professor at the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics. Director, Hong Kong Institute of Diabetes and Obesity and Director, Clinical Research Management Office at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) and Chief Executive Officer of the Asia Diabetes Foundation.
She graduated in UK and is an accredited endocrinologist and clinical pharmacologist with training in psychiatry and epidemiology. Her areas of interest include epidemiology, genomics/genetics, clinical trials and care models in diabetes. She is a member of an NIH funded Global Diabetes Consortium and Asia Genetic Epidemiology Network for discovery of causal genes in type 2 diabetes and steering committees of multi-national clinical trialsfor prevention and control of diabetes and its complications.
In 1995, she set up the Hong Kong Diabetes Register (HKDR) as a data-driven quality improvement program which formed the template for a territory-wide risk assessment and management program in 2000. The databases and biobanks that accompany the HKDR laid the foundation for a multiomic discovery program for the genetic regulation of diabetes and its complications and personalized care. In 2007, she designed the first web-based Joint Asia Diabetes Evaluation (JADE) Program to use information technology, protocols and decision support to establish an Asia Diabetes Database to promote quality care and collaborative research.
She has co-authored in 500 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters. Over the years, she has received multiple awards including the Harold Rifkin Award for Distinguished International Service in the Cause of Diabetes awarded by the American Diabetes Association in 2019.
